Student Instructions
Good readers understand what they are reading. It is important for us to STOP when we don’t understand a word in a story. When we understand new words, this makes our vocabulary grow and we understand more what we are reading and we understand more about the world around us. When we come to a new word, we can use this think aloud strategy 1) reread, 2) continue reading, 3) look at the picture or 4) replace the word with a different word we think fits and then reread the sentence to see if it makes sense. Sometimes we use one of the strategies or we may use all four steps. If we still don't understand, we may need to ask our teacher for help.
