Make a Non Standard Measuring Tool

Grades: 1st Grade
Subjects: Math

Student Instructions

Click the voice to hear and see my examples Click add You will be making your own non standard measuring tool to measure a few objects at your house. First, think about what you want to measure and what you will use for your tool. Remember all of the objects that make up your tool must be the same size. Using objects of different sizes won't allow you to measure properly. Use the voice to hear me read the directions. On pages 1 see the examples. On pages 2 use the photo to take a picture of your tool and what you measured with it. Click check

Prior to assigning this lesson I had already introduced non standard measurement. I asked who knew what a measurement was and then after turn and talk and discussion the class talked about different things in the room (including the room itself) and how or what tool we needed to measure them. I discussed and the students brainstormed how they could measure something if they did not have a standard tool like a ruler. We tried various items in the classroom and after some experimentation came to the conclusion that the items we used to measure with must all be the same size. We used these examples as a spring board to the definition of non standard measurement. I used this activity to reinforce the concept and give the students some practical exposure to creating and using tools for mathematical purposes, and fun! Standard: (USCC) 1.MD.A2- Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps. Limit to contexts where the object being measured is spanned by a whole number of length units with no gaps or overlaps.
