Student Instructions

Today you will need: * Several oranges (or lemons) * Scales a) Set the scales up. b) Make sure that they say 0 when there is nothing on them. c) Place one of the oranges in the middle of the scales. d) Write down what the scales say. e) Take the orange off. f) Repeat with the other oranges. Record the range of weights and find the average weight of the oranges How do you find the average? (Listen to voice instruction for this one if you need) To find the average you ADD together all the oranges and DIVIDE by the number of oranges eg: If your oranges weighed: (I completely made up numbers here!) 6 + 5 + 5 + 7 + 7 = 30 30 ÷ 5 = 6 The average weight is 6 *Challenge* What else can you find the average of in your home today? What was the process that you went through to find it?
