Student Instructions

To COMPARE two things means to explain ways both items are THE SAME. On the other hand, to CONTRAST two things means to point out all the ways the items are DIFFERENT. Now that we have finished reading the novel Because of Winn-Dixie and watching the movie, please use the Venn Diagram on page 1 to brainstorm as many similarities and differences as you can think of between the book and movie. Then you will turn this brainstorming page into sentences and paragraphs in your notebook explaining your observations. Please organize your paragraphs in a similar way as you did your argumentative piece: Paragraph 1 is your introduction where you start with your thesis, or pop-out sentence and tell the reader what you will be writing about so they know what they should be expecting to read. Paragraph 2-3 would be your details including evidence and examples from the book and movie. Remember to stretch these details out across multiple sentences so your paragraphs have between 3 and 6 sentences each. Paragraph 4 should be your conclusion where you restate the big idea of your piece and remind your reader of the most important parts you want them to remember as a takeaway. This is also a great place for you to give the reader homework as well...something like "Now go out and read the book as soon as possible," or "The movie is available free on Disney+ so what are you waiting for?!" When writing, it is ALWAYS a good idea to reread your piece one more time looking it over for ARMS and CUPS before submitting your work. When you're sure you've checked your piece over for capitalization and punctuation, then you may press the check. 1. Use add to start the activity 2. Use drawing or label to complete the Venn Diagram. Don’t forget to include your headings to show what you are comparing and contrasting. 3. Use mic to record an explanation of your work. 4. Use check to save your work.
