We start this whole group as I model how to use pen and place dot on each bug as I count it, stopping when a group of ten is reached and grouping it by place a circle around it. We discuss the thinking behind this. e.g. how do you know which ones you have already counted, how it allows the mathematician to see the group of ten and how many extra. We use and practice our subitizing skills and talk about what grouping is a smart strategy.
