This activity is based on the Beginning Diagnostic Decoding Survey from Really Great Reading. For access to a printable form of this assessment and the recording form for analysis of the results, visit https://www.reallygreatreading.com/dds. The Beginning Decoding Survey should not be administered at the beginning of first grade, but it can be given to students beginning in the second semester of first grade and any time after that. Students in second grade should be able to accurately decode all of the words listed.
