Standard Algorithm for Division

Grades: 5th Grade, 6th Grade
Subjects: Math

Student Instructions

WATCH THE ATTACHED VIDEO LESSON to review the definition of a "standard algorithm" CREATE YOUR OWN 1-4 MINUTE VIDEO to explain a familiar STANDARD ALGORITHM for DIVISION. This may be an American way to calculate division ("short" or "long" division), or an algorithm used in your home country. Your video should show one of the following: * Your parents or an older sibling teaching you the steps of a familiar algorithm for division * You teaching someone in your family the steps of a familiar algorithm for division * You teaching your pet or toy the steps of a familiar algorithm for division If you and your teacher/audience prefer doing this in a language other than English, that's fine! However, if you decide to speak in a different language, your video must show the steps with numbers on a paper or screen, so a viewer of ANY language could understand what you are doing from watching.

Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

This activity should be assigned only AFTER students have developed an understanding of how to divide by using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. They should be encouraged to illustrate and explain the calculation in their posts by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
