Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

Begin by reading the book Not A Stick without showing the illustrations. Ask students what was happening in the story, how not seeing the pictures felt, etc. Next, read the book again, this time showing the pictures. Allow students to think-pair-share what was different the second time. Discuss with students how illustrations contribute to a reader's understanding of a text. Students will then complete this activity. Assessment: Mastery: Student’s drawing matches the sentence and student is able to generalize how illustrations help the reader understand. Partial Mastery: Student’s drawing matches the sentence and student is able to explain how their specific illustration helps the reader understand. Progressing: Student’s drawing matches the sentence, but student is not yet able to explain how their illustration helps the reader understand. Beginning: Student’s drawing does not match the sentence.
