Rounding with Open Number Lines

Student Instructions

Watch the video to see what your final product should look like. Follow the steps for each number on the board to show your thinking as you round. 1. Write the number. 2. Underline the place you’ll be rounding to as listed on the board. 3. Draw the open number line. 4. Mark the friendly numbers. 5. Mark the number in the middle. 6. PLOT the number you are rounding on the number line and label it. 7. Show which friendly number is closer. 8. Write the equation to show the rounding. 9. Tap the check and choose your name. 10. Start a new drawing with the next number on the board.

Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

You will need to have a list of numbers and the places they are to be rounded to posted on the board for this activity. Suggestions 1. Round 7,342 to the nearest ten. 2. Round 98,231 to the nearest thousand. 3. Round 9,508 to the nearest thousand. And so forth.
