Student Instructions

When you are adding a suffix to base words, there are some rules to be aware of that will help you with your spelling. First, when you add a vowel suffix (a suffix BEGINNING with a vowel) to a base word ending in VCe, you drop the e before adding your vowel suffix. Next, if a base word follows the 1-1-1 rule, you must double the final consonant when adding a suffix. Finally, if a base word ends in a Cy, you must change the y to i before adding the suffix. DIRECTIONS: 1. Choose any book(s) of your choice and find an example where each of the three spelling rules was applied. 2. On page 1, you will take a picture of the word where the e was dropped before the vowel suffix was added. Use the pen tool to circle the word. And use the label tool to write the BASE WORD (make sure you spell it correctly). 3. On page 2, you will take a picture of the word where the final consonant was dropped before the suffix was added. Use the pen tool to circle the word. And use the label tool to write the BASE WORD (make sure you spell it correctly). 4. On page 3, you will take a picture of the word where the y was changed to i before the suffix was added. Use the pen tool to circle the word. And use the label tool to write the BASE WORD (make sure you spell it correctly). 5. Look over your work making sure you've completed everything, then press the check when you are ready to submit.
