Estimating Area

Grades: 4th Grade
Subjects: Math

Student Instructions

We are going to try to estimate the area of these things. Remember: when we estimate, we use what we know to guess how big something might be. We don't use measuring tools, and we don't need to be exactly right. Just try to get close! 1. Use the draw tool to estimate and mark the LENGTH and WIDTH of the object. Be sure to use a suitable UNIT. Would you measure the length of the Astro in millimetres (mm) or the width of a postage stamp in metres (m)? 2. Use the text tool to write the estimated area of the object and calculation you used. Again, remember to use the correct UNIT for marking your area. 3. Do this for each of the objects. Go and explore, and feel free to make rough measurements (without tools).
