Design a Zoo

Grades: 4th Grade, 6th Grade, 5th Grade
Subjects: Math, Home Learning

Student Instructions

Design a Zoo (Home learning task focused on applying area and perimeter skills) Use the squared paper to create your own zoo (you can print or draw on Seesaw). You must draw an enclosure for each animal you would like to include and calculate the area and perimeter for each one. Each square on the paper has a side length of 10m therefore each box is 100m² (meters squared). Mild / Hot: Use only square or rectangular enclosures. Spicy: Use composite shapes enclosures made from rectangles / squares together. Think about each animal and what size enclosure would be appropriate for each. Write the area and perimeter of each thing (including workings) in your design below your plan. Mrs Gilliland Learning Intention: We are learning how to apply our knowledge of area and perimeter to a real-life design problem. Success Criteria: I can design rectangular animal exhibits (mild/hot). I can design composite shape enclosures (spicy). I can calculate the perimeter of each enclosure. I can calculate the area of each enclosure. I can write down all my answers and show all of my workings.
