Emoji Math: Variables in Number Sentences

Grades: 4th Grade, 5th Grade
Subjects: Math

Student Instructions

We read number sentences just like we read word sentences! You can determine if a number sentence is true or false, like the one below. True or False? 30/5=6 You can make a number sentence true by filling in the missing number. ____ = 12 / (3 + 3) You can make a number sentence true by inserting parentheses. Try it! 4 * 2 + 5 = 28 And now you can determine the value of a variable in an open number sentence! 5 * y = 40 What is the value of y? As a class we tried to find the value of each emoji in the attached picture. Can you use a note note to create your OWN emoji math?

Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

This activity assumes you've discussed all the number skills listed above and have had a number talk as a class to find the value of emojis (variables) in the image. Now students apply this learning and try it on their own!
