Accepting Rules and Authority: What is Respect?

Grades: 5th Grade, 6th Grade, 7th Grade
Subjects: Character Building, Special Education

Student Instructions

Learning Intention: Define what respect means towards other people. Everyone wants to be treated with respect. Although sometimes, without thinking, people make comments that are disrespectful. Sometimes these disrespectful comments are made towards teachers because a student is angry, wants to show off, or they are being rude. This lesson demonstrates ways to treat the teacher with respect, while still letting your feelings out. Thinking questions: 1. How would you feel if I slammed the door in your face? 2. How would you feel if I knew you were in a hurry at the store and I let you go through the checkout first? 3. Which of those examples shows having respect for others? 4. What does respect mean? 5. What are some ways students show respect for their teacher? 6. How do you think a teacher feels when the students show respect? Directions: Consider the responses or actions of the students in the cartoon. Circle the students who are showing respect and cross out the ones who are not.
