HabitWise Lesson #6: How Habits Can Help Us Improve Relationships

Grades: 9th Grade, 7th Grade, 8th Grade

Student Instructions

Purpose: You’ll learn how you can use the habit loop to examine how your thinking and communication affects your relationships. You will be able to: • Describe black-and white thinking and explain how it can have a negative impact on relationships. • Identify descriptions and behaviors that fall into the “gray area” of situations. • Define paraphrasing and identify how it can improve relationships. • Identify the positive and negative ways social media affects relationships. • Identify behaviors that could replace bullying. • Identify behaviors that could replace sexting. Vocabulary: • Black-and-white thinking: Judging things in only extreme or opposite ways, like terrible or great, ugly or beautiful, or enemy or friend. • The gray area: The possibilities that fall between the extremes of black-and-white thinking. • Paraphrasing: Saying in your own words what you think the other person means.
